Citepad – Citation Generator runs entirely inside your browser.
- It has no server. It does not create accounts and does not ask for an email address.
- It collects no analytics, telemetry, crash reports or usage statistics.
- Everything it stores (settings and the content you create with it) is kept in your browser's local extension storage on your device. You can export it as a file and delete it at any time from the extension's settings page.
- It does not sell, share or transmit your data to anyone, because it never leaves your computer.
- One optional feature, "Look up DOIs and ISBNs online", is off by default. If you turn it on, the DOI or ISBN you are citing is sent to crossref.org or openlibrary.org to retrieve publication details. Nothing else is sent, and turning the switch off stops all network activity.
Permissions
The extension asks Chrome for the following, and uses each only as described:
- activeTab — Reads the current page's metadata only when you open Citepad on it.
- scripting — Injects the metadata reader into the current tab when the popup opens. Nothing runs on pages you have not opened Citepad on.
- storage — Stores settings and your projects and saved sources locally.
- clipboardWrite — The Copy buttons place the formatted citation on the clipboard.
- Optional access to all sites — Requested at runtime only if you cite a PDF whose bytes cannot be read under activeTab. Explained on screen before the request.
Data retention
Data exists only in your browser's local extension storage for as long as the extension is installed. Removing the extension deletes its local data. No copy exists anywhere else.
Changes
If a future version ever changes what the extension stores or where, this page and the extension's store listing will say so before that version ships.
